Social Media

30 Nov

Hi, folks…

I just wanted to give you a very quick heads-up that I’m leaving The Social Media Platform Formerly Known as Twitter. In the future, you can receive notifications about new articles and the occasional other announcement by following me on either Mastodon or Bluesky. My apologies to anyone who’s inconvenienced by this, but it does feel like the right time to make the jump, what with Bluesky in particular growing so quickly.

I’ll see you all on Friday with some fresh Digital Antiquaria. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

This blog also has an RSS feed, which is how I’ve been following it for years.

I had no idea you were on Twitter! I have only ever followed the RSS, which gets sent direct to my Kobo reader.
I also left Twitter two years ago, so no loss.

Just to pile on as I really value sites having RSS feeds, I too have only ever seen updates through the RSS feed in my news readers.

I commend your choice, and did you know that Bluesky would allow you to have an “@filfre.net” account? I think that helps a lot in establishing authenticity of accounts. As others have said, kudos for also keeping an RSS feed up and running!

You’re not doing this because Bluesky is growing, are you?

Um…. what would be the problem if he were?

It seems common for people and organizations to make a show of leaving X recently. However, in this case it is (on the surface, at least) just a matter-of-fact statement.

The reasoning provided seems odd. Why would it be a right time to leave one platform just b/c another is growing quickly (but still *nowhere near* the size of the former, as an aside). It’s not like a zero-sum game. You’re now using two services, anyway: Mastodon and BlueSky. Why not still use X? Many more people are still on X and won’t all be joining either of those two.

I hope it isn’t just because particular “orange man” won election?

Most def. Not so nice when right wingers can spill their vitriol along with the left wingers, isn’t it?

Man, all these questions. If you were in a service contract with Jimmy where he contracted to deliver his wares on some pre-defined platform you may be entitled to some sort of explanation. If alternatively, you are freeloading the merch, he has given you more explanation than you think you deserve.
